THE 8TH HABIT®: FROM EFFECTIVENESS TO GREATNESS
In today's challenging and complex world, being highly effective is the price of entry to the playing field. To thrive, innovate, excel, and lead in this new reality, we must reach beyond effectiveness toward fulfillment, contribution, and greatness. Research is showing, however, that the majority of people are not thriving. They are neither fulfilled nor excited.

HABIT 6: SYNERGIZE
To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it.

HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
Communication is the most important skill in life. You spend years learning how to read and write, and years learning how to speak. But what about listening? What training have you had that enables you to listen so you really, deeply understand another human being? Probably none, right?

Habit 5 is so valuable because it teaches us to be selfless and to have a solution driven-mind!

Habit 3 : Put First Things First!

Habit 1 says, "You're in charge. You're the creator." Being proactive is about choice. Habit 2 is the first, or mental, creation. Beginning with the End in Mind is about vision. Habit 3 is the second creation, the physical creation. This habit is where Habits 1 and 2 come together. It happens day in and day out, moment-by-moment. It deals with many of the questions addressed in the field of time management. But that's not all it's about. Habit 3 is about life management as well--your purpose, values, roles, and priorities. What are "first things?" First things are those things you, personally, find of most worth. If you put first things first, you are organizing and managing time and events according to the personal priorities you established in Habit 2.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hope all is well in your world. Are you ready to start another excellent week of Leadership Development?? I hope so! This week we will be exploring the "Habits of Highly Effective People". Much of this week will be devoted to the ideas of the author Stephen Covey, who has written an important book on this subject. Notice the #1 habit of highly effective people - Be Proactive. Lesson learned, get started!

This is an excerpt from this week’s lesson - Enjoy!

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Habit 1 : Be Proactive
Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.

Domino's Pizza is one of my favorite pizza chains! Recently Domino's decided to adopt a new slogan for the company, "Failure is An Option!" I was shocked to see this quote because I'm accustomed to seeing "Failure IS NOT an Option." After reading several business journals about Domino's new venture of embracing failures, I realize failure shouldn't be frown upon. Experiencing failure can directly correct our areas of improvements and help troubleshoot more efficiently!

In your 9.3-9.4 EP and Discussion Forum assignment, we will discuss "Rags to Riches" stories. Throughout history, Americans are known to cherish these types of stories because people can easily identify with not having the main essential of life. "Rags to Riches" stories tend to inspire us to strive for greatness and give a glimpse of hope of pursuing our dreams. One of my favorite "Rags to Riches" stories is world renowned author J.K. Rowling of the Harry Potter series, she was barely making ends meet to support herself and family, currently she is a growing empire from her mysterious and whimsical imagination!

"Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton was the one who asked why" (R. Nixon).

What is inspiration? What inspires you? How can you inspire others? Why is this quality important for effective leadership?
8.6 Journal allows you to reflect on the above quote. For this assignment, you will use the quote to discuss the meaning of your personal inspiration. Personally, I feel we need to be reflective leaders and encourage questioning. Life is as simple as discovering the "why's" in life! Remember to discuss this assignment in 150 or more words, be mindful to use examples and personal experiences.

Take a look at his story and see how it applies to our unit!
